01 / THE TRUE ORIGIN STORY

It all started
with a phone call.

In 1999, my friend Michelle called with a simple request. Her friend had just had a baby and wanted to share photographs with family and friends back in New York.

I built her a one-page website, uploaded the pictures she sent me, and gave her a URL to share. No custom domain, no logins. Just a way for people far apart to share a moment.

That little project got my wheels turning. I loved IT and photography, and I had an early digital camera. Soon I was putting my own pictures online for my friends — after nights out across Long Island, New York City, and summer weekends in the Hamptons.

By the next morning, everyone could see the night before. Friends started asking for their own albums. Someone asked to comment on a picture. One friend wanted to advertise his motorcycle for sale. Each time, I went home and built the next feature.

During our summer weekends in the Hamptons, a large group of friends shared a house. During the week, we were out across Long Island and New York City. Wherever we went, my digital camera came along. The morning after a night out, people could already find their photos online.

Friends made T-shirts and business cards with the site address, and I handed those cards to people I photographed. Word spread, some photos appeared in local Hamptons publications, and local bars and nightclubs—primarily around Long Island—began paying for advertisements.

At one point, as best I remember, there were around ten advertisers paying roughly $150 a month each. I was still working in IT and building this for the fun of it. What started with Michelle’s request had become a real community, one request and one friendship at a time.

THE HAMPTONS · SUMMERS 1999–2001

Summer weekends.
A bigger family.

The Hamptons were our weekend escape, but the friendships went far beyond the summer house. A large group of friends, unforgettable nights and lots of photos helped spread 4allmyfriends from person to person.

03 / A LITTLE INTERNET HISTORY

Remember when
this was the future?

Long before social feeds were everywhere, 4allmyfriends had its own member experience. We still have the original Classic ASP source files to help us reconstruct what those early pages did.

04 / THE ORIGINAL HOMEPAGE · ARCHIVAL SCREENSHOTS

The real thing.
Pixels and all.

This is what visitors actually saw in an early version of 4allmyfriends.com: rotating photo montages, a directory of member usernames, login and join links, sponsor advertisements, and a visitor counter. The images below are original screenshots, not recreations.

THE MEMBER WALL

A directory full of friends

The green links were usernames of actual accounts. The little blue album icon signaled an active photo album. We're preserving this screenshot as history rather than republishing old members' details as live profiles.

THE COUNTER

009405

This was the number visible when the original page was captured—not the site's lifetime traffic. It gives us a real glimpse of the audience at one moment in time.

PAID ADVERTISING

Local nightlife supported it

Original sponsor banners at the foot of the page include Chelsea Street and The Gathering Lounge. Most paying advertisers came from around Long Island, not only the summer Hamptons scene.

05 / THE ROTATING MONTAGES

Every visit, a different memory.

The original montage files have been found! These are the real collages that rotated across the old homepage — now playing again above. Fifteen files survive in this recovered collection, including close variations.

06 / THE NEXT CHAPTER

The years changed.
The friendships didn't.

Some of the people in these pictures are still friends today. The site may have gone quiet, but those summers—and the friendships behind them—never really disappeared.

We're bringing back the stories, photos, and wonderfully ridiculous moments, one memory at a time.
